"Fishing to me is more than the hook up, it’s about the experience. It’s the adventure, the thrill of the catch, camping in the outdoors, telling stories around the campfire and knowing that I’m right where I belong. It is a feeling of absolute freedom.

Through my work as a Freshwater Fishing Guide, and Professional Tournament Angler, I want to help others experience the same love for fishing and the great Australian outdoors as I do. I started competitive fishing in 2015 and quickly grew into a huge passion, I won Co-Angler of the year in 2015, Rookie of the year in 2017, Pro Angler of the year in 2018. I represented Australia in South Korea in May 2019 with a 6th place finish and also represented Australia at the BASS Nation Championship in the USA in 2019 taking out an 8th place finish amongst 120 of the world’s best anglers. Club Captain’s Report: Its been a bit quiet. Getting sick of the rain. Be careful out on the water as there is still a lot of debris from the floods. Tailor and prawns about with some big fish in the shallows. A lot of sharks around. Time to do some maintenance while the weather is crook. There is a new Simrad unit out – stay tuned for more info.

Weighmaster’s Report: Last months weigh BBQ was good. This weekend FOM are flathead and pearlies. There has been Tailor near the spit. Come down to the weigh in for a snag and a beer even if you aren’t fishing.

Recorder’s Report: In the Tacklebox.

QGFA Report: New Gamebase is up and running. Newport comp is ANZAC weekend.

ANSA Report: Interclub is in May at Jacobs Well. We need more species in the species challenge – we have to beat Kingaroy. Our Sportfish comp is in July so keep the dates clear – it will be a big one.

General Business:

  • Trevor – fished Cal Wide. Saw a big pallet floating in the water.

  • Brad – fished the containers and got 6kg Pearlies and some big snapper.

  • Bennie – also fished the containers and got nice Pearlies and Snapper.

  • Quentin – Fished the Little Shipis comp for Longtail. Saw an Orca.

  • Neil – use red flares on dull days if in distress. There were issues with a jet ski sinking and flares were hard to pick up.

  • Vaughn – Told the story of his bungs going missing and nearly sinking his boat. Also of Yvette getting her first Toga.

  • Neil – gave us a rundown on progress for the Sportfish Tournament with many new sponsors on board.

  • Quentin fished Harvey Bay and got heaps of fish.

  • Andy asked if we could get demos re correct flare use, plus there was some discussion on the new lifejacket rules.

  • Talk by Dan from Fisheries re FADs and some of the data being gained from the tagging programs.

Tonights Raffles won by Carlo and Smucky.

Meeting closed: 9.05pm

Chairmans Report

G’day all;

It’s been a bit quiet on the fishing front lately. I did get out on the Sunday of the ANSA Species Challenge with Mick. It was a bit blowy out of the south, with a solid swell rolling up the passage, but we still managed to land a few fish.

Just a quick update — the Southeast Interclub has been rescheduled to the weekend of 6th to 8th June at Jacobs Well. This is a club competition, and it’d be great to see a few of our members get involved and represent.

Also, mark your calendars for our Sportfishing Comp

The QLD SHADES Moreton Bay Fishing Challenge happening on the weekend of 11th to 13th July. There’ll be some fantastic prizes up for grabs, and the event is open to both members and the public — so feel free to invite your fishing mates along.

Tight lines,

Captain’s Report

May 2025

Well, is this weather ever going to clear? Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Moreton Bay is absolutely on fire! The variety of species being landed is nothing short of incredible:

  • Snapper are active around Woody Point

  • Flathead are being caught in good numbers in the Pine River and along the Scarborough waterfronts

  • Grunter are showing up at Cabbage Tree Creek

  • Tailor are trickling in, albeit in small numbers

  • Mackerel are widespread throughout the bay

  • Cobia have even been landed off the Shorncliffe Pier

  • Larger bream and whiting are also coming onboard regularly

  • For those looking to try something different, cast netting for prawns has been productive—especially in the harbour during low tide, when they're most active.

Recent Events

The Newport Game Fishing Extravaganza has been run and won congratulations to Team Chaos from the Sunny Coast Game Fishing Club on their victory! Unfortunately, the Interclub Challenge has been postponed to June 6–8 due to inclement weather. A 30-knot forecast is a little more than most of us would like to battle on the water.

Upcoming:

QLD Shades Moreton Bay Fishing Challenge 2025 Start prepping your crew! Our club is proudly hosting the QLD Shades Moreton Bay Fishing Challenge on July 11th–13th. This promises to be a fantastic event with plenty of action and camaraderie. You’ll find all the competition rules, entry info, and more in this month’s edition of Tacklebox—so don’t miss it!

Weighmasters Report

May 2025

Hi members,

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend our last barbecue weigh-in afternoon on the 13th of April for family reasons. Lleyton filled in for me, so I can only report on what he has passed on. Apparently, the rain came down in buckets. The few people there were drenched, according to one participant. Oh, for that roof over our area. If anyone knows a Building Certifier or Inspector who could come down to advise us about council approvals, that would be great.

Our April inshore species was Flathead. The heaviest Flathead was worth $50. Mick won that with a nice fish. The offshore species was Pearl Perch, with none caught that will now jackpot to $350. A couple of Snapper were weighed so I’m guessing the other species' $50 would have gone to that angler.

On the 18th of May we will be looking for a Bass inshore worth $50 and an Emperor for the offshore species to take the jackpot. That shouldn’t be difficult, as there are a few Grassies around the Redcliffe inshore reefs and in Bribie Passage. The heaviest other species will be worth the usual $50.

I fished the “Newport Billfish Extravaganza” on the last weekend of April. I was one of four on board “Over It” (an ex RPGSC boat, now owned by Cameron Deacon). We caught 2 Blue Marlin, 1 Dolphin fish, 2 Yellowfin Tuna (vermin according to Newport.). I got one of the Marlin and a Tuna. We fished 37 and 24kg where as most of the fleet fished 15 and 24 kg, giving them a points advantage. “ Fin and Tonic” also fished the comp with Steve, Brad , Dave and Trevor on board. Trevor caught a Blue for their only scoring fish. “Kaos” (Sunny Coast) took out the money ($29K) but no big fish were weighed. Their functions were held in Morgan’s carpark, with a box of fish , calamari and chips for dinner ( a few prawns for entrée). Can’t beat our venue.

Come down on the 18th of May with your fish to weigh. Unfortunately, I will be away once again, hopefully catching heaps up at Stanage Bay.

ANSA REPORT

May ANSA Report In the Champion Club leaderboard, we have slipped into 6th position with 46 species, and Cairns is way out in front with 151 species. We have now been overtaken by Kingaroy. If anyone has an idea to motivate members to submit their capture, I would like to hear it.

The ALL-SPECIES CHALLENGE, took place on the May Day Long Weekend in mostly tough windy and sometimes rainy condition. These conditions were pretty much the same up and down the QLD coast, so no club had the advantage of great weather. This is the event that challenges you to catch the most species you can in one weekend.

The winners are:

  • Champion Club - Cairns Sport Fishing Club with 49 species

  • Champion Senior Male – Chris Bache (Cairns SFC) with 35 species

  • Champion Senior Female – Helen Johnson (Hinchinbrook SFC) with 18 species

  • Champion Junior – Zander Magin (Bundaberg SFC) with 11 species

  • Champion Sub- Junior – Hudson Schiffke (Bundaberg SFC) with 8 species

  • Our club finished with 10 species.

Next event is our club Sportfish Comp organised mostly by Club Captain Neil Bailey . He has chased up some great prizes so please support the event and have a crack. It will be worth the entry fee and is open to everyone.

Hinchinbrook Fishing festival for 2025. Wednesday 1st October to the 4th. I will be staying at the BIG4 Wanderers Caravan Park at Lucinda, and I will be there from the 28th September to the 5th October. It is a 16hr drive one way so plan your trip. The fishing can be crazy good. You can fish inshore or offshore on the Great Barrier Reef, or chase Barra and Jacks in the rivers or Estuary. There is a heap of videos on YouTube to highlight the many different areas and species to target in the region.

I have some pink Ansa tags in stock if anyone needs any.
